Why digitizing the shop floor is more relevant and more critical in a post-COVID-19 world

In brief

  • Focus on the user experience by using human-centered design thinking.
  • Digital twin is an important capability that is set to transform manufacturing.
  • Your business needs to be equipped for the now, next and beyond, taking immediate steps to safeguard business continuity and initiate crisis planning.

COVID-19 has placed unprecedented challenges on manufacturing companies as they look to reopen and, in some cases, restart production. But with this challenge has come opportunity — the opportunity to reimagine work, transform operations and emerge from the downturn with more agility, resiliency and ingenuity.

Being forced to adopt different ways of working during the pandemic is now helping companies to rapidly embrace digital technologies at scale, giving a much-needed push to drive digital transformation — especially in manufacturing, one area that was felt to be lagging prior to COVID-19.

A recent 免费黄色大片survey of 6,000 C-suite executives showed that while the number one emphasis upon reopening is on employee safety, 63% of companies are focused on a physical return and a reimagining of work, while 58% are using this time as an opportunity for transformation. However, there has been a fundamental — and much-needed — shift in approach from process or technology first to people first.

As future resilience and agility become increasingly critical, the human-centered Factory of the Future (FoF) is needed by manufacturing now more than ever. Focused on technology with speed and innovation at scale, FoF helps to plan value, prove value and scale value, defining your journey to becoming a data-driven, resilient enterprise with a culture of innovation.

Build a culture of innovation, empower the shop floor

With 免费黄色大片Smart Factory you can accelerate your operational excellence agenda with a digital coaching platform, digitize and automate daily transactions creating a paperless shop floor and transform your workforce to make data-driven decisions with our IoT-enabled applications such as digital twin.

Digital twin is an important capability that is set to transform manufacturing. More nimble, more cost-effective and more grounded in the real-time reality of how your business actually operates, it stretches the bounds of what’s possible by offering a virtual replica of any physical product, equipment asset or supply chain.

From a virtual version of a tire to a whole car, its production line, the entire factory or network of plants and even the end-to-end supply chain, digital twin can represent any asset in the digital realm, enriching it with data based on the physical world to tap into a wide range of transformative possibilities. A snapshot of features that this transformative capability can facilitate include:

  • Accelerating and refining product testing
  • Simulating assembly lines to identify process issues
  • Boosting supply chain resilience
  • Monitoring the plant remotely
  • Providing enhanced asset maintenance at reduced cost
  • Enriching customer experience by providing personalized options

Yet, according to a CNBC report, while companies spent $1.3t on digital transformation efforts in 2019, $900b of that was wasted as they failed to commercialize their proof of concept (POC) efforts. Hence, the term “pilot purgatory” has become commonly used when speaking of emerging technologies.

Focus on user experience and invest in enablement

There are fundamental reasons why digital transformation efforts fail, yet the most common pitfalls are avoidable by following leading practices. Be sure to start with a clear vision and an objective view of your current maturity so you can build a realistic road map based on business outcomes and create a link between your digital transformation program and your operational excellence program. People are key, so invest in training, enablement and a culture of learning and collaboration. Focus on the user experience by using human-centered design thinking.

Data is key, and data quality and governance are critical; work to ensure you add sensors to augment data. Waterfall is dead, so you need to be agile, which means rapid prototyping with bi-weekly sprints. While experimentation is important, a first-to-scale approach trumps everything and quick wins are key to building momentum. You should also define a scalable and comprehensive architecture and technology stack and remember: an integrated approach to Operational Technology — Information Technology (OT-IT) upfront security is critical. Finally, co-create and co-innovate with your ecosystem and business partners to help maximize possibilities.

The PTC LiveWorx event, which brought together speakers focused on critical digital transformation topics for key industries, including manufacturing, was a great opportunity to discuss the impact that innovative emerging technologies, from augmented reality and IoT to robotics and connected products, could have on the factory floor.

Following COVID-19, it will be even more crucial for the industry to adapt and change to help ensure future resilience and adopting FoF is key. Your business needs to be equipped for the now, next and beyond, taking immediate steps to safeguard business continuity and initiate crisis planning, while developing a resilient enterprise going forward. This will allow you to reframe your future, operate a “new normal” and transform to succeed. The time to innovate is now.

Summary

As future resilience and agility become increasingly critical, the human-centred Factory of the Future (FoF) is needed by manufacturing now more than ever. Focused on technology with speed and innovation at scale, FoF helps to plan value, prove value and scale value, defining your journey to becoming a data-driven, resilient enterprise with a culture of innovation.
